The Wind Catcher is an sound performance that interprets the absurdity of human’s efforts to find meanings in seemingly insignificant matters through defining goals, setting rules and executing tasks. It asks that what really matters to us if everything we do is just a chasing after the wind.

The performance uses the invisible wind as the major source of sound and found objects as instruments. The Wind Catcher travels to different places to explore different kinds of wind as their job. With a set of self-made tools, the character intervenes with, records and composes the sound of wind on the site as a regular routine. At the end of the routine, the character looks on what thier hands had labored to achieve, they wonders — what it is that I get?

While using wind as a metaphor, it explores the acoustic affordance of air movement through the intervention of found objects and audio feedbacks.

“I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” — Ecclesiastes 1:14

The Weight We Carry is one of the explorations of our ongoing research about menstruation. It is a sculpture that tells the collective memories and sensory experience of having a period. Drawing upon the research about menstruation, identity forming and personal narratives in the context of patriarchy, late-capitalism and deep-rooted misogynistic culture in East Asia, it confronts the tension between societal expectations of productive body, fertile body and personal’s needs to care for a body.

Each of us then wrote a memo about our memories related menstruation since the first time we ever experienced it. Through writing and reflection, we uncovered how the experience of having periods has influenced us in so many ways that we’ve never thought about. It was such a healing process and unexpected exploration of our emotions and perceptions surrounding growth memories, self-identify, and gender perspective. This process also allows us to realize the far-reaching impact of the patriarchal and deeply rooted misogynistic culture prevalent in East Asia. We hope to hear from more memories, stories about menstruation --- the bodily experience that always perceived to be inconvenient, unproductive, and not important to be discussed (not to mention that menstruation has been stigmatized for a long time).

Showing at NYU ITP Camp Show (June 2023)

We invited people to sit on the chair and share their own sensory experience of menstruation. We are interested in exploring forms of resilience against institution’s macro-narrative imposed on women and seeking creative ways of building personal narrative, identity and community. We are currently creating a zine based on all experience and stories we collected from participants.

What Does ︎ Mean To A Bat? is a part of an on-going artistic research project A Look At Looking (through not looking), which examines how human’s perceived realities have been mordenized by spectacle through vision-based experience.

Abstract

Our living experiences have been reconfigured by ubiquitous digital contents in hypermedia spaces. I wanted to explore what it is like for another being to experience a human-made hypermedia space that is saturated with symbols, signs and spectacles.
Inspired by Thomas Nagel’s essay What is it like to be a bat?, I chose bat as the metaphor. Bat shares a similar cognitive mechanism as human beings but has a very distinctive biological construction and perceptual experience. Bats are mammals, and are assumed to have conscious experience. It is a highly evolved animal who actively uses biological sensors just like human beings. Bats mainly use echolocation to navigate and perceive objects.
Through this experience, I hope to let people experience our human-made world from another being’s perspective, and reflect on how our human experience is just one kind of experiences in nature.

“Echolocation affords an individual with the unique ability to produce the energy that ‘excites’ the world around them.”
--- Schörnich, Nagy & Wiegrebe, 2012

	Storyboard

It is a semi-narrative, semi-interactive experience. User will follow a bat’s voice-over narration through out the experience, and interact with the environment through echolocation. There are three chapters in this experience:
Chapter I. Born To Be A BatIt’s a scene where the bat is born --- a cave and a park. Users will feel being a bat in the nature, learn how to echolcate, fly and eat mothsChapter II. Apple TreeIn this animated scene, the bat will have a conversation with the Universe about its previous life as a human in its dream.
Chapter III. Looking for an AppleIn this scene, users will wonder around Time Square, trying to look for the hint from the Universe about its previous life as a human.
The narration style is inspired by Jim Trainor’s animation The Bats.

Visual Design
The visual style is based on the research of bat’s perception.
Bats have a cross-modal perception, which means they dynamically switch between the modalities. It uses vision for large objects domain and echolocation for small objects domain.
I intended to represent these two modes of perception using different visual language.

Bat’s Visual PerceptionBat has dichromatic colour vision and UV vision. It can see things especially under dim light environment.

Bat’s Echolocationg PerceptionWhen a bat is echolocating, it construct streams of sound data into real-time acoustic-image motion pictures, which is similar to LIDAR scanning.

Interaction
In this experience, users will perceive and interact with the environment through echolocating, and move around through flying.

Echolocation simulationUser makes sound to activate the environment. When users make sound, they will hear bat chirping in their headset as their “voice”.The bat’s sonar beam can be likened to an auditory flashlight.
There are two variables controlling the “echolocating” effects:
The higher pitch, the narrower “field of view” but the more points be acitvatedThe higher volume, the more points to be activated

People usually use this quote to indicate that you cannot accomplish certain things without norms or standards.
Square and circle is a very specific definition of a shape. There is no space of ambiguity when they are referred to. To recreate these shapes, we, without practice, need to use tools or processes. It seems to be our instinct to define, classify, disambiguate and interpret. But why making a circle or square at the first beginning? Isn’t the ambiguity and the in-between state seems more natural in our lives? Isn’t the uncertainty a source of creativity? Hence, I wanted to make a musical instrument to express the idea of the dynamic tension between clarity and ambiguity in life, and the emotion when struggling with them.

I gained inspiration from Japanese artist Akinori Goto’s work, and decided to use the form as a way to represent the morphing between two states, being circle or square.

I decided to map the shape lightened to the shape of sound wave --- morphing from more squar-ish wave to circle-ish wave.

Sound Design
Performer interact with the instrument through the following ways to change the shape of light and, thus, change the shape of sound wave.

Interaction Design
The mapping of performer’s action and sound is achieved to accelerometer sensor installed in the instrument.

I want to breathe with you

An interactive installation that “breathes” along with you.
Made in 2018 winter
Exhibition:ITP Winter Show 2018
Tools:Arduino Nano,Programmable AirSpecial Thanks: Amitabh Shrivastava

I want to breathe with you is a air bubble that “breathes” along with you.
It is comprised of a belt embedded with a stretch sensor that monitors users’ chest movement and a balloon that is pumped into or sucked out of air programmatically using Programmable Air. When user breathes in, the balloon inhales. When the user breathes out, the ballon also does the same.

How does emerging technology embodies and perpetuates existing gender biases, among many other biases, in our society? How can we use speculative as creative tools to incite discussion about complex social issues like such?Started as a research project with Huiyi about mentrual experience and cyberfeminism, “Does Alexa Dream of Having Period” invites participants to reflect, imagine and cocreate an alternative version of our everyday voice assistant. Together we challenge the narrow assumptions, preconceptins and givens with how such technology is made in our society.

A Look At Looking (through not looking) is my Master’s thesis project at ITP, NYU. It’s an artistic research project that examines the inter-relation between human’s phenomenal worlding and vision-based perceptual experience that has been modernized through spectacle and media. It consists of three experiments that defamiliarize users’ predominant way of perceiving familiar contexts with other animals’ perceptual mechanisms.

Episode I. How would a dog understand a map
Episode II. How does digital interface feel to a mole
Episode III. What does ︎ mean to a bat?

Episode I. How does a dog understand a map?

“The map is not territory” --- Alfred Korzybski

It is a physical map made from smell.
Most of us read a map using eyes, the action of which shapes our understanding about spaces and places. What if we can smell a map, like what a dog normally use to navigate the world?

Different smelly materials were paced on a black cardboard mapping with the signature smell of according physical spaces. Users will sniff around to feel the spatial relations. As scent flows, it is a transient map in which places have no clear boundaries.

Episode II. How does a digital interface feel to a mole?“Perceptions are a user interface, but not necessarily reality.” --- Donald Hoffman

It is an augmented reality application that invites users to feel the tactile texture of a blanket from my childhood.

Mole can hardly see. Especially star-nosed mole, it uses a sense of touch to construct its world. Like moles, today we navigate our world through touching. Unlike moles, we experience the world by looking through the tiny screen we touch. The development of haptic technology has made our looking experience more immersive.
To what extent can we feel a sense of touch through the digital interface? How does that touch experience different from what a mole can touch?

Episode III. What does ︎ mean to a bat?

“The Spectacle is not a collection of images, but a social relation among people, mediated by images.” --- Guy Debord

It is a VR experience which embodies user to be a bat, wondering around Time Square and Apple store.

Context

As a being mainly relying on vision to perceive the world, human vision experience and perceived reality has undergone the process of modernization along with the flourish of automation, consumerism and the development of mass media technologies.
It seems even more relevant in the current century, when the technologies of imagery making, editing and circulating have been advanced, mobilized and democratized. The image-driven social media, synthetic media tools, hypermedia spaces, along with the ubiquitous data collection and micro-targeting algorithms work together as a system to further trap human’s attention and energy into the loop of seeing, having, appearing, sharing, seeing…… Media has become a new sensory organ for humans today, but it is an organ that is not controlled by humans themselves. When an individual re-lives the imagery carefully curated and presented through media, and compresses such experience into new imagery to be shared, the boundary of human experience is confined and its authenticity is questionable.
Coming from a background in marketing and advertising, I understand marketing as the process of myth making through perceptual persuasion --- a process to mass persuade consumers to believe in illusory desire and promise. “People must be trained to desire, to want new things, even before the old have been entirely consumed. (...) Man’s desires must overshadow his needs.” These words from Paul Mazur, a leading Wall Street banker working for Lehman Brothers, illustrates the very core purpose of marketing --- to train people to desire. Among all, visual representations are the most effective training tools.
I wonder: how, and to what extent, visual representations, as the carrier of commoditized desires and myths, reconfigures human’s phenomenal world? How media and technologies have pushed the visual resolutions and boundaries of the circulation? And how could an individual be aware of such reconfiguration as the first step to regain authentic experience?
In response to these questions, I started my thesis project to research and examine the inter-relation of the phenomenal world, perceptual functions, spectacle and digital media.
The research was divided into four major parts: conceptual, methodological, formal and technological. I started by reading about previous discussions on spectacles, representation and history of human vision modernization. Then I moved on to methodological research on human and other animals sensing, perception and cognition in order to create the experiment mechanism. Finally, I researched the possible forms for expression and its technological feasibilities.

	Methodology
The methodology of the experiment was inspired by Jakob von Uexkull’s umwelt theory. Umwelt (from German) is the world as it is experienced by a particular organism. Uexkull described that organisms have different umwelt, even though they might share the same environment. Each organism is complete in its own sense. In order to feel what it is like to be in a different umwelt, Charles Foster, the writer of Being A Beast, spent six weeks living with badgers, sleeping in a dirt hole and eating worms. His writing about this experience was eye-opening to me. It provides a gate for me to feel the world from a non-human perspective (though may not be completely true). It makes me think of many things that we have taken for granted.
After experiencing how the umwelt embodiment works on me to shift my thinking paradigm, I decided to use this methodology for my experiments. I was then inspired by Stefano Gualeni’s essay, Augmented Ontologies, which theorized the potential of using interactive digital media as a heuristic instrument to “do” philosophical experiments through establishing stable cognitive and interactive relationships.
Hence in my thesis project, I created three experiments that defamiliarizes users’ predominant way of perceiving familiar contexts with other animals’ perceptual mechanisms, in order to examine how modernized vision experience has shaped humans’ umwelt.
Each experiment is a combination of research and art practice. I would start with an observed context of visual representations’ influence on human perceived realities. Then I would do research on the context and how other animals would perceive this differently. Finally, I would create an experience for users to revisit this context with other animals’ perceptual mechanisms.

For the Farewell of Mankind is a critical object created in response to the phenomenon of institutions & government using bio-technology and big data to quantify, measure, monitor and control human bodies. In stead of telling users if they ARE pregnant or not, it is a pregnancy test that tell users if they SHOULD get a child or not based on their DNA data on 23andMe.With the development of bio tech such as gene sequencing, the accessibility of bio-data through leading genomics companies such as Ancestry, 23andMe, or UK BioBank, monitoring individuals’ body has never been easier.
To whom are they giving our data to? And how will they be use against us? What are the possibilities of this behind bad intentions? Is it possible that eugenics exists in a different form?

Trailer

DesignWe built an USB flash drive on top of a traditional, pre-existing pregnancy device to imply how accessible our bio-data is in present technology. Inside the object is a micro-controller with WiFi module and OLED display; that when plugged, acquires data from 23andMe, analyzes and sends it back to the device. User with mutant in their gene were advised not to have offspring and vice-versa.
